Sea of Lies Part 34

"He sure is taking his time, isn't he?" Amelia asked no one in particular as Delbert was gingerly wrapping her wound in some bandages they had from the skiff's first aid kit.

"I'm sure he'll be back soon." Delbert assured her. He wasn't very sure of his own words. So many things could happen out there that he would rather not think about.

"Please, after what he said to her, it'll be a miracle if she decides to come back— Ah!" she cringed as a shot of pain raced from the cut in her stomach to the rest of her body. "Speaking of taking his time, pick up the pace, Doctor! There are pirates about!" Amelia barked.

Delbert sighed. She couldn't stop being a captain for even a minute.

"You need to rest. There's nobody out here. I'm sure both Jim and Melody are fine."

*

"Melody no!" Jim yelled.

Melody grabbed the chain of the necklace Eris had given her and stuck the knife against it. If this was what it took to break her bond to Eris, then fine.

She was waiting for the thin gold chain to snap from the silver knife, but the chain was undented. Melody stared at it a second. She stuck the chain again, harder this time. The chain started to heat up.

Eris' reflection shook her head. "Stupid girl. That thing's super charged with magic older than even that grandfather of yours." She smirked. "You think a simple butter knife will do anything."

Melody just stood there, staring at the clam- shaped locket. She yanked her arm back, in efforts to rip it off her own neck. All of the sudden, a feeling of light-headedness waved over her. She felt her throat start to close, and her lungs started to gasp for air. She immediately let go of the pendant.

Eris only laughed harder. "Sweetheart, you are a sad sight to behold. You're in way too deep. The power has been inside you too long."

"What do you mean?" Jim yelled, only to have his arm twisted harder by Scroop. He let out a grunt in agony.

In a sickening flourish, Eris' reflection rose from the water, forming a pillar of water. You could see her entire body now.

"The magic in the necklace is dark, and fueled by deceit." She explained, a dark smile on her face. "In other words, she's drowning in her own sea of lies!"

Melody fell to her knees. She ran a hand through her hair. It was hopeless. She was cornered. Trapped like an animal.  Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no one to help her.

"Well, now that we're all here, let's start our little treasure hunt! Welcome to Treasure Planet, children." Eric chuckled.

Jim's eyes widened. He wanted to smile at the fact that he had found it. He was here. But he couldn't.

"My Lady," Scroop hissed. "The captain, the doctor, and first mate are still out there. Should we go after them?"

Eris paused. She touched her index finger to her chin, thinking. "Hm." She muttered. "That could be a problem. If that captain gets back to the boat, she could send for an entire fleet."

"You know talking to oneself is often a sign of insanity." Jim yelled at her.

She glared at him and nodded at Scroop. He responded by twisting Jim's arm until Melody was sure she heard something snap. Jim collapsed on the ground, shaking from pain.

"Jim!" Melody gasped.

She started to run over to him, but just as she reached him, Scroop swatted his claw at her, and it hit her face. She felt her mouth fill with blood again. Fine. I'll play your game. she thought a Scroop. She spit blood at him. Just as he flinched, she hurled a rock at him. It hit him square in the face, causing him to roar in pain.

Jim chuckled. Scroop raised his claw to hit again, but Eris raised her hand.

"No need." She said. "You can have them all you want after I get the gem."

Scroop sucked his teeth and took a step back. Melody crawled over to Jim  and buried her face in his shoulder.

"I'm so sorry." She whispered.

"Anyway, we'd best set up camp out here. Scroop, you and a few other men go find the others. Bring them to me." Eris ordered.

Scroop nodded and started yelling orders at a few random crew members. They quickly obeyed.

"Silver!" Eris yelled at him. "Tie these two up We can't have them running around."

Silver sighed. "Yes, ma'am."

He took the rope from his belt and hobbled over to them. "You first, girl."

"Silver..." Melody whispered. "You know this is wrong." She whispered, her voice dripping with desperation. "We need help."

Silver sighed and closed his eyes. "Desperate times, lass. Desperate times."
