Sea of Lies Part 39

Melody looked at Flint. "So... Am I going to wake up now?" she asked.

Flint chuckled. "Momentarily. You only need to be here long enough to realize your purpose."

Melody sighed. She couldn't believe it. Such an obvious answer... could Eris truly have overlooked something like this? I mean, this was the loot of a thousand worlds! There was bound to be hundreds of diamonds! And if she had this long to plan, how would she not know the only thing that could make it all crash down?

As if he had heard her thoughts, Flint spoke. "Eris is the goddess of chaos. Chaos is a state in which you are oblivious to what is really there. You only know rage, violence, and a desire to destroy. Eris truly believes nothing can stop her. She is conceited enough to believe she is stronger than good. It's blinded her.... as it did me."

Melody looked at him. Then a thought struck her. This man was nothing anymore. He was a spirit, a ghost. And in life, a pirate. He was a liar, murderer, thief, and all around sinner. If he hadn't been here, he would probably be burning in a hellish place, eternally tortured for the crimes he committed. Why would he want to help her? What would he have to gain? Who would want to help Melody so much that they would resurrect swine like him to give her the only thing thing that made a difference between her surviving this, and perishing.

"What is in this for you? Who sent you to me?" she demanded.

As she asked this, Flint's skin started to dissolve slowly at first, but after a few seconds she could see his skeleton. Flint, with his mouth empty and skin hanging off where his lips were, smiled.

"The Dark One. He has more power than you, your grandfather, and Eris combined." his voice came out as a cold, echoing whisper. "He is not one to be questioned, unless you want to walk the earth for eternity. Now accept the generous gift you've been given and use it!!"

A flame started to consume what was left of him. Melody's stomach churned as he burned, smoldered, and turned to ash.

Then, just as it had minutes earlier, everything went black.

"I spy something.... green." Delbert said as they walked through the forest, so dense that there was only branches, leaves and vines.

"Tree." Jim answered, still carrying an unconscious Melody.

Delbert sucked his teeth and nodded. Jim grinned.

"Ok. I spy something.... tall." he said.

"Tree." Delbert shrugged.

It had been going like this for hours. The boredom of this long trek through the jungle had forced them into stupid games like this. They had played twenty questions, categories, and now, I spy. It was a bit worse than walking.

"Will you two shut up!" Amelia snapped.

Jim had caught up with Amelia and Delbert. They were still surrounded by pirates, but there was only one Jim wanted to talk to. Silver. He had drifted to the back of the pack. Jim had to know why Silver would do this. He had seemed like almost a father to Jim. An uncle to Melody. But that would make her his cousin... and that would be awkward considering the recent events...

He looked back at Melody. She still hadn't stirred. It had been a long time. All that time. he'd carried her. He didn't mind she was small and thin, so she couldn't have weighed more than ninety pounds. But it was the worry that got to him. How long would she be out?

As if she was trying to answer his question, her eyes shot open. They were wide, as if she had just seen something terrifying.

"Mel!" Jim gasped.

Melody was panting. She looked at him, and her eyes said 'I need to tell you something.'  She swatted her finger to tell him to come closer, eyeing one of the nearby pirates.

Jim leaned closer.

"I saw something. You're never going to believe it, but it may save all of our hides." she whispered so quietly he almost couldn't hear her. "You're going to have to trust me."

He nodded. " I trust you."

She sighed. "Um, Jim?" she said, her voice at its normal volume. "I can walk."

Slowly, Jim lowered her feet to the ground. She stood on her own, and started walking with them.

"Have a nice nap?" Amelia asked, her voice sounding kind of bitter.

Melody was hurt for a second, but she knew Amelia was tired. If anyone deserved a rest it was her.

"I know how to get rid of Eris." she whispered.

The group came closer, so they could hear her talk without the pirates hearing. All of them. Jim, Delbert, Amelia, and... wait....

"Where's Arrow? They had him..." Melody asked.

Amelia looked away. Delbert put a comforting hand on her shoulder. Amelia took it and squeezed it. Man, Melody thought. What did I miss?

"It's pirate code." Jim told her. "He who falls behind... stays behind."

Melody gasped. Arrow... he had been awful beat up. What if....

"Spit it out, girl!" Amelia hissed. "What must we do to get rid of that witch?"

Melody swallowed. "I can take her. I just need someone  to take care of the pirates. Once I get Eris, they'll be the only problem."

Jim looked at her. "Exactly how are you going to do that?" he asked.

Melody bit her lip. "If I told you, you wouldn't let me do it."

"If you don't tell me, then 'm definitely not letting you do it." he told her.

"Touche." she sighed. "The gem I'm supposed to get for Eris... It can be broken, but I need a diamond to do it."

"It's the loot of a thousand worlds!" he exclaimed. "There are bound to be some."

"That's not the problem." Melody said. "If Eris catches on to what I'm doing..."

Jim sighed. He looked her in the eye. "If something happens to you..." he shook his head.

She took his hand. "It's what's meant to happen. I promise I won't do anything stupid. But you have to promise me something too."

Jim looked at her. "What?" he asked.

"After all this... Whether I like it or not, I'm going to be a mermaid." she said. "I need to to promise me you'll try to forget all of this. Just get us back to the ship, and get me back to the water. That's all I ask of you. Can you do that?" she asked.

Jim shrugged as he sighed. "Nothing will stop me from getting us out of her. And... If I really have to... I'll get you back home. But even if I never see you again... Nothing can make me forget you."

Melody bit her lip and felt the burning of tears come to her eyes. "Me neither." she smiled.

All of the sudden, the branches parted. They revealed a cliff hanging out over a massive gorge. Melody looked up at the sky. It was a deep grey, with puffs of white clouds scattered around. It was very ominous. Ominous indeed.

"Silver!" Eris yelled.

The cyborg stepped forward. "Yes ma'am?"

Eris' misty form, suspended in the air pointed to the ground. There was a groove in the ground that looked like the imprint of a sphere. It had several other lines cut into the ground, that made an intricate pattern resembling....the map....

"There." Eris said, her seaweed colored hair whipping about. "The map."

Silver reluctantly reached inside his pocket. He looked at the map for a few seconds, and then to the deep, endless gorge. Melody wondered if he would throw it.

"We don't have all day!" one man yelled.

Silver sighed and looked at Jim. He had a certain apologetic look that made him look away. Silver bent over and pressed the map into its slot.

A few seconds passed, and the grooves started to glow a light green color. All of the sudden, a green three-dimensional map materialized above it. Jim's mouth dropped open. He could see every planet, even some he didn't recognize. Taking a risk, he stepped forward and touched one of the planets.

Before he could think, a giant portal came into view at the edge of a cliff. On the other side of it he could see dense forest and creatures that inhabited the planet he chose.

So this is how Flint did it. This is how he disappeared. he thought.

"Don't touch that!" Eris snapped.

The tone in her voice made him jump back. She had an evil look on her face that made him not want to get in her way.

"Silver." Eris said. "Tap our current location."

Silver stared at the map, thinking. But then he saw the two ringed planet. Treasure Planet. Slowly, his hand shaking, he touched it. And the portal changed.

Gold. Mountains of it. More than anyone there had ever imagined. This was it. Flint's trove.
